Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between Open Source and the paid plans?
Open Source is the core OpenBerth server, free forever, that you run yourself. One repo, one instance per deploy. If you want to host multiple apps, you deploy multiple OpenBerth instances — one by one — and wire up DNS, SSL, reverse proxying, and everything else yourself. Paid plans run the same software, but we handle the multi-tenancy, DNS, SSL, backups, monitoring, and updates so you can just open the dashboard and deploy. Same code, dramatically different amount of work on your plate.
Can I start with Open Source and move to managed later?
Yes. Everything is portable. Self-host today, and when running your own instances starts eating your weekends, import your setup to a managed workspace. We'll help you migrate.
What exactly is a workspace?
On paid plans, a workspace is a ready-to-use OpenBerth instance we run for you — it has its own URL, API key, and resources, and you just deploy code to it. On Open Source, there's no such thing as a "workspace" out of the box — you're running a single OpenBerth server on your own machine, and if you want more instances, you install and configure each one yourself.
What are MCP and CLI access?
MCP (Model Context Protocol) lets your favorite AI tools — Claude, Cursor, ChatGPT desktop, and others — deploy and manage your workspaces directly from inside the chat. CLI access lets you do the same from your terminal with a single command. Both are part of OpenBerth on every plan, including Open Source.
Are workspaces really always on?
Yes. Every paid plan, including Hobby, runs continuously — no cold starts, no waking from sleep. Your apps respond instantly whenever someone visits.
Can I use my own domain (like myapp.com)?
Custom domains are part of the Business / Enterprise plan for managed hosting. On Open Source, custom domains are entirely up to you — it's your machine and your DNS. If you're on Hobby/Starter/Pro and need a custom domain, get in touch.
Do I need to know DevOps to use the paid plans?
No. That's the whole point. You get a URL and an API key, and you paste code (or let Claude/ChatGPT generate it for you). We handle servers, scaling, SSL, backups, and security.
Can I upgrade or downgrade later?
Yes, anytime. Upgrades take effect immediately; downgrades apply at the start of your next billing cycle. Annual plans can be upgraded mid-term — you pay a prorated difference.
Is there a free trial on paid plans?
Yes — every paid plan includes a 14-day free trial with no credit card required. Deploy as much as you want; if it's not for you, just walk away. Or stay on Open Source forever — that's free too.
